Built for Success
Plant Street Academy enriches homeschooling with real-world skills for school, work and life.
What if a student could learn civics by figuring out how to change something in their own community? Geography by tracing the decisions behind a global business? Logic by thinking like a detective?
At Plant Street Academy, those aren’t hypothetical questions. They’re class.
Founded by Lenka Brady, with Dorothea Holcomb serving as Director of Homeschool Education, Plant Street Academy is built around the idea that education should prepare students not only to know the answer, but to ask better questions in the first place.
“We teach what standard academics does not,” Dorothea says. “Our students master content through application and real-world problem-solving, not passive memorization.”
That approach comes alive in courses that sound very different from a traditional school schedule. In Unmuted, students prepare for job interviews, presentations and real-world conversations. Clear Thinking turns logic into detective work as students investigate claims, recognize bias and identify faulty arguments. Even civics becomes something students do rather than simply study. In Civics & Activism, middle schoolers choose an issue they care about and learn how to work with government to create measurable change.
Plant Street Academy calls its model parent-directed education, reflecting a homeschool landscape that now includes professional educators, specialized courses, robust curricula and collaborative learning communities.
For Lenka, however, the philosophy comes down to something much simpler.
“To be a success at whatever you do, you need to be able to think things through, ask the right questions, and communicate clearly,” she says. “Everything we teach builds toward that.”
Because eventually, students leave the classroom. And when they do, Plant Street Academy wants them ready for something bigger than the next test: real life
