Nothing captures the essence of high school quite like the vibrant energy of a cheerleading team. High ponytails swaying in unison, oversized bows gleaming under stadium lights, bright white sneakers dancing across the sidelines, and the radiant smiles of teens rallying behind their school. This joyful display creates an unforgettable atmosphere that resonates deeply with students and fans alike. For many, these moments define high school athletics. But for athletes with special needs, these opportunities were once out of reach.
That all changed when Coach Karen Smith transformed the athletic program at West Orange High School (WOHS) with the introduction of Unified Cheer. This groundbreaking program offers athletes of all abilities the opportunity to shine and proudly represent their school
“I launched the Unified Cheer program at West Orange in partnership with the Special Olympics,” says Coach Karen, the dedicated Unified Cheer coach and special education teacher recently honored as Teacher of the Year. “We are now officially recognized as an FHSAA (Florida High School Athletic Association) sport, allowing our athletes to earn varsity letters at the end of the season.” This recognition not only instills pride in the athletes but also highlights the increasing significance of inclusivity in high school sports.
Since launching in January 2023, the excitement surrounding Unified Sports at WOHS has been electric. “We began with just a cheer team, but we’ve expanded to include basketball, football, cornhole, and, soon, E-sports,” Coach Karen says. With the unwavering support of her husband and a dedicated team of volunteer coaches, she fosters a community filled with energy and enthusiasm, where every participant can thrive, regardless of their abilities.
Starting a new sports program is no small feat. It requires cutting through red tape, winning over stakeholders, and rallying community support. But for Coach Karen, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. “The most challenging part has been coordinating practice times for everyone. Thankfully, we have an amazing group of parents who help get the athletes to and from practice,” she says, highlighting the community’s dedication to the program’s success.
Todd LaNeave, Athletic Director at West Orange High School, proudly shares, “Unified Sports are a fantastic addition to our community and WOHS. As someone who is new to this position, I was surprised to learn that these programs are quite rare in schools.” In fact, it is one of two high schools in Orange County that offer Unified teams, and the other competes solely in bowling. In contrast, West Orange is about to launch its fifth different Unified team.
“These teams owe their success to Karen’s hard work and dedication,” Todd emphasizes. “We couldn’t be more proud of what she’s accomplished.”
Cheerleading is all about spirit and camaraderie, and that requires inclusivity. Inclusivity is the key to happiness for everyone.
Field of Dreams
Once a week for two hours, the team transforms classrooms, gyms, and hallways into vibrant hubs of activity. But this is no ordinary practice—it’s a celebration of movement, friendship, and joy. The infectious enthusiasm fills the air as the team gathers, creating a captivating atmosphere brimming with laughter and excitement.
Coach Karen signals the start of practice with a whistle and a clap. The session bursts to life with dynamic drills, energetic cheers, and synchronized movements, filled with the spirited rhythm of bouncing pom-poms and radiant smiles.
Kelsie, a freshman Unified Partner, beams as she watches her teammates practice. “I love being with some of my favorite people,” she says. “These athletes might not have the same opportunities as others, so it’s amazing to be part of something that makes a difference.” In this environment, Kelsie embodies the spirit of leadership and inclusion.
Reese, a senior Unified Athlete, echoes this sentiment. “My best friends are on the team, and I love watching the Warriors!” she says, proudly reciting cheers and ending each with a high kick and a warm hug for Miss Karen.
Danielle, also a senior, has been cheering with Unified Sports for three years. “I love going to Panera with the team before games,” she shares, her focus unwavering as she practices every move. Her bright smile, a radiant reflection of Warrior school spirit.
Jena, a self-proclaimed “super senior,” confidently strides to the front of practice and announces, “I’m in my Cheerleading Era!” As a three-sport Unified Athlete, she values inclusion and cherishes the friendships she’s built. And then there’s Blake, a Unified Athlete who says, “Athletes with disabilities and regular athletes coming together creates a joyful, wild, and fun atmosphere. We’re all here for one reason: to support West Orange High School.”
Every athlete brings their unique personality to the mix, and that’s all part of Coach Karen’s master plan. “I prioritize building strong relationships in the classroom, fostering trust so they know I understand their needs,” she explains. “My coaching approach is flexible and individualized; I pay attention to when a student needs a break or a different strategy to succeed.”
What many may not know is that West Orange High School’s Unified Cheer Team are the reigning state cheer champions—the only team at the school to hold such a prestigious title. The squad includes a sideline team with 12 members who perform at all Junior Varsity games and a competition team of 20 athletes who compete four times in the spring. Last year, they proudly showcased their talent at Walt Disney World’s Wide World of Sports, taking first place in the state competition—a moment they will cherish forever.
The impact of these Unified teams extends beyond athletics. They foster deep friendships, create lasting memories, and pave a path of inclusion for students with special needs. “Gone are the days when these students felt out of place at school; now, they’re some of the most beloved members of our community,” says Assistant Coach Grace Uhle.
Spend just one hour with this team, and the enthusiasm is undeniable. The joy they bring to every practice and game enriches the entire school. The WOHS Unified Cheer Team are more than athletes—they are the embodiment of inclusivity, joy, and community spirit. As Coach Karen says, “Spreading joy is at the heart of what we do. When people see our team, they can’t help but feel uplifted. Cheerleading is all about spirit and camaraderie, and that requires inclusivity. Inclusivity is the key to happiness for everyone.”

The team’s success extends beyond the sidelines. In addition to supporting Junior Varsity games, pep rallies, and homecoming parades, the team performs at events like the Orlando Magic’s Night of Inclusion. “Our kids are deeply connected to the community,” Karen says. “Even though they’re in different classrooms, they collaborate seamlessly and feel truly included.”
Coach Karen’s dedication doesn’t stop at cheerleading. Beyond coaching Unified teams, she actively supports Special Olympics and leads a local Best Buddies program. She’s even created a coffee shop in partnership with Axum Coffee at West Orange High School, providing a space for her students to work and interact with their peers. “This initiative encourages them to engage with other students and fosters meaningful relationships.”
In a world often focused on competition, the WOHS Unified Cheer Team reminds us that true victory lies in unity, support, and shared joy. These athletes aren’t just cheering for their school; they’re cheering for each other, creating a legacy of inclusion and love that will inspire future generations.
With every chant, every high kick, and every wide grin, we’re reminded that real strength comes from togetherness, and by lifting each other up, we can create a brighter, more inclusive world—one cheer at a time.
