Future Focus

Lake Sumter State College offers affordable, flexible pathways tailored to meet the goals of Central Florida students.

Lake-Sumter State College has evolved enough over its past six+ decades to understand that the four-year university experience is simply not for everyone. While about 50% of its students do indeed enter onto an AA degree pathway and go on from there to earn a bachelor’s degree at LSSC or transfer to a university, a healthy 25% (and growing) of today’s students opt to focus on workforce programs and getting a job after graduation. The remaining 25% of students are in the LSSC dual enrollment program—taking college classes while still in high school. Last year, more than 200 students graduated with their AA before their high school diploma!

Higher Education, Lower Cost

The inescapable prime benefit to starting college out with an AA from LSSC is that it effectively cuts the cost of the first two years of a four-year college education in half! Plus, all students who complete their AA at the college are guaranteed admittance to a state university. But there is more to it than that. Class sizes are smaller here, and students have access to more support when they need it. Students feel connected to the College community as they explore options aligned to local career opportunities. LSSC fosters a close-knit feel among all its students. Those who want to get more involved can do that. Those who want to take on more leadership roles are encouraged to do that.

Lake-Sumter State College prioritizes student life on campus to foster engagement and community among the student body. And yes, they also have a major focus on athletics; of the 28 state colleges, LSSC boasts the second largest athletic program. Many athletics facilities have been recently renovated, and a new beach volleyball complex opened in the spring of 2025. The college offers beach volleyball, baseball, cross country, golf, softball, track & field, and volleyball.

Workforce Ready

One of the areas the college continues to expand is its commitment to serve as a vital workforce engine for the community. LSSC holds ongoing talks with local businesses to assess their needs. Then, it creates programs to equip students with the skills and credentials to meet the requirements of those businesses. Their programs run the gamut from training truck drivers and line workers for electric companies, to building construction management, criminal justice, AI, and extensive healthcare opportunities.

Lake-Sumter State College has four campus locations in the heart of Florida. They consistently rank in the top 150 community colleges nationwide and among the best in Florida. For the people and the businesses throughout Central Florida, LSSC truly is a college that has something for everyone.
