Learn to Teach

Lake-Sumter State College Elementary Education program is training the next generation of teachers.

At its core, Lake-Sumter State College is an answer for the growing demand for skilled and educated workers in Lake and Sumter Counties.

Lake-Sumter State College offers 2-year and 4-year degree programs specifically designed to answer that demand. In addition, the college has a direct connection to UCF—students who complete a two-year program are guaranteed acceptance there.

The college is increasingly known for its elementary education and nursing programs, offering a BS in both disciplines. But perhaps its greatest strength, according to Stephanie Luke, Elementary School Program Director, is Lake-Sumter’s adaptability and flexibility. “For example, when our construction industry let it be known they needed help, we responded immediately with a Construction Management program. Our Teaching Program came from answering just such a need. And today we offer one of the most innovative Teaching Programs in the country. From Day One, our students are in practicums in real classrooms and getting paid! Our last semester students are
student teachers, in classrooms, and getting paid.”

Unlike a much larger university, Lake-Sumter State College is the perfect size to offer more local involvement with the community. They partner with local high schools, for example, to give students dual credit for specific classes. That way, high school students can get a jump on their college careers.

All students are assigned an advisor upon entering the school to help them get the most out of their time there. Many students have a good idea what they want to pursue. But for those who have no idea, their advisor can help them try out different classes and programs to see which ones spark an interest.

Lake-Sumter State College has four campus locations in the heart of Florida and consistently ranks in the top 150 community colleges nationwide and among the best in Florida. For the people and the businesses throughout Central Florida, that is a very good thing.
