This magical moment on our family vacation almost never happened! Our daughter, Kada, experienced a non-fatal drowning accident in our backyard when she was just 1 year old. Like many loving parents, Tanya was watching her closely — then, for just a few seconds, she looked away. When she didn’t hear our normally loud baby, she knew something was wrong. Kada had slipped out the back door and was underwater, silent and unable to breathe.
There are no words for the terror of that moment — the panic and the crushing realization of how quickly drowning happens without splashing or warning. After being pulled from the pool and spending time in the hospital, we were blessed beyond measure: Kada survived with no lasting damage. But we were forever changed.
That day became a turning point. Tanya promised our children would never be unprepared around water — and no other parent should have to feel that fear. She became a Survival Swimming Instructor and founded Safety First Swim School with one mission: to save lives through survival swim education and water safety.
With Spring Break and warmer weather bringing more time near the water, distractions happen fast. Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children ages 1 to 4, and swim lessons reduce the risk by 88%. Survival swim lessons can make the difference between panic and peace of mind.
