How can you tell if your child needs a tutor?

Sometimes it can be hard to know, but there are signs if you know what to look for. Lisa Marie, owner and operator of Ur Learning Solution, has been reading those signs for decades and knows how to tell if a student needs extra help. Here are the signs parents can look for:

Not doing the work. They don’t turn in homework or don’t want to do the work because it’s too difficult.

Guessing. Kids want to finish an assignment as fast as possible because they don’t understand it.

Deflecting. Ask them a question and, rather than get it wrong, they’ll ask you a question or change the subject.

Avoiding reading aloud. Ask your child to read out loud. If you get “No, I like silent reading better,” they may be uncomfortable sounding out the words.

Lowering their voice when reading. If they drop their voice on certain words, they may not be sure how to pronounce something. Try saying, “What was that word again?” It’s a perfect chance for you to help them.

Disliking writing. They don’t like writing. At all. Because they haven’t learned how to express themselves in words.

During the initial evaluation, a child is starting fourth grade should be comfortable with third grade material, Lisa Marie says. “So, we begin there. An evaluation takes about an hour, and I’ll be able to get a good picture of a child’s strengths and weaknesses.” Ur Learning Solution then creates a personalized approach to address those areas.
